School Final Exam vs. the NJ State Exam: What's the Difference?
The short answer: There are two different tests on the way to a New Jersey salesperson license. The school final exam is part of your 75-hour course. To finish the course you need a passing grade and at least 80% attendance (N.J.A.C. 11:5-2.2(s)). The state exam is the licensing exam given by PSI, and you can only book it after you've completed the course (PSI candidate bulletin). Pass the first to unlock the second.
Here's how the two fit together. For more about the course itself, see our guide to the NJ 75-hour pre-licensing course. For the full path, see how to get a real estate license in New Jersey.
What is the school final exam?
It's the exam your real estate school gives at the end of the 75-hour course. New Jersey's education rule builds it into the course. The salesperson course outline includes time for "quizzes and final examination" (N.J.A.C. 11:5-2.1(f)), and the time a school allots for its final exam counts toward the minimum course hours (N.J.A.C. 11:5-2.1(d)).
So the final isn't extra. It's part of the 75 hours.
What do you need to complete the 75-hour course?
The rule for licensed schools is short: "To receive credit for a course, the student must receive a passing grade and attend at least 80 percent of the class instruction" (N.J.A.C. 11:5-2.2(s), as amended effective Jan. 20, 2026).
That gives you two requirements:
- A passing grade. The rule requires one but doesn't set the passing score in that sentence. Ask your school how it grades the course and what happens if you don't pass the final on the first try.
- At least 80% attendance of the required class hours. Ask your school how it tracks attendance and what make-up options it offers.
When you complete the course, the school issues you a Course Completion Certificate (N.J.A.C. 11:5-2.2(t)).
What is the state exam?
It's New Jersey's licensing exam, administered by PSI Services. The salesperson exam has 110 questions (110 points), a 4-hour time limit, and a passing score of 70% (77 correct) (PSI candidate bulletin). You can take it at a PSI test center or remotely online (NJREC fingerprinting). Your score shows on screen when you finish, and if you don't pass, your emailed score report includes a diagnostic of your strengths and weaknesses (PSI candidate bulletin).
The content follows PSI's published outline: a general real estate section plus New Jersey-specific law. Our NJ PSI exam guide walks through it.
How are the two exams connected?
They happen in order, and the first one unlocks the second:
- You complete the course, with a passing grade and 80% attendance.
- Your school sends your eligibility to PSI electronically. PSI says your education provider does this "upon successful completion of the course requirements" (PSI candidate bulletin).
- You book the state exam. The education has to be finished before you can reserve a seat (PSI candidate bulletin).
The rule says exactly that: to qualify to take the salesperson exam, you must first successfully complete a course of at least 75 hours at a school licensed by the Commission (N.J.A.C. 11:5-2.1(b)).
When does the one-year clock start?
This is the part people miss. Your clock starts when you complete the course, not when you pass the state exam. You have one year from your pre-licensure course completion date to pass the PSI exam and file a complete license application (NJREC fingerprinting). PSI also says your eligibility expires one year to the day from the date it's issued (PSI candidate bulletin).
So passing your school final is a real milestone. It means the countdown has started. Schedule the state exam soon after, while the material is fresh. For planning backwards from that date, see how long it takes to get a NJ real estate license.
Does the school prepare you for the state exam?
It's supposed to. Along with the required subjects, the rule says instructors "must provide information on the State license examination and the Commission's license issuance procedures" (N.J.A.C. 11:5-2.1(d), as amended effective Jan. 20, 2026). Just remember the two exams aren't the same test. Your school writes its own final. PSI writes the state exam from its own outline. Use the PSI content outline to check your weak spots after the course.
