7 Mistakes to Avoid on the NJ Real Estate Exam
The short answer: Most costly mistakes on the NJ real estate exam are avoidable process errors—wrong ID, late arrival, remote-setup failures, ignoring the scratch-paper and break rules—or study errors like memorizing definitions without practicing application. The salesperson exam is 110 questions in 4 hours, and you need 70% (77 correct) to pass (PSI Candidate Information Bulletin, updated 2/1/2026). No official pass-rate figure is published in the bulletin, so treat every claim about "how many people fail" as unverified.
These seven mistakes stay distinct from multiple-choice strategy and confusing terms on the exam. Use those pages for how to read questions and for look-alike vocabulary.
1. Letting your PSI name and ID disagree
PSI requires one current, government-issued photo ID with your name, signature and photograph. Temporary IDs are not accepted. The first and last name on your PSI account must match that ID exactly. If your name has changed, bring official documentation such as a marriage license or divorce decree (PSI bulletin).
Fix: Create the PSI account from your current legal name before you book. If a school eligibility record used a different name, fix it with the school and PSI early—not on test morning.
2. Arriving late (or launching the remote exam late)
At a test center, arrive 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away and forfeit the fee. For remote exams, you may launch within 30 minutes of the booked time; if you have not started within 15 minutes after the booked time, you forfeit the fee or eligibility (PSI bulletin).
Fix: Treat check-in as part of the appointment. Remote candidates should budget time for the webcam, ID and room scan before the launch window closes. Details are in PSI remote exam setup for NJ.
3. Choosing remote without respecting remote rules
Remote exams ban scratch paper and breaks. You may not change computers or rooms during the exam. Lighting, webcam placement and internet must meet PSI's checks. PSI says that if you cannot finish without a break, do not register for remote (PSI bulletin).
Fix: If you rely on scratch work for math, book a test center—centers provide one sheet of scratch paper and a pencil, returned at check-out. If you need a restroom break option (still with no extra time), a center is the format that allows a proctor-approved restroom trip.
4. Skipping the content outline until the week of the test
The bulletin's outlines list topic weights. On the salesperson national outline, Contracts is 19%—the largest slice—followed by Agency (13%) and Practice of Real Estate (12%). The NJ portion concentrates on statutes and rules governing licensee activities (PSI bulletin). Waiting until the last week to learn the outline is how people under-study high-weight areas.
Fix: Build a checklist from the outline early. Our PSI content outline study checklist and last week before the exam help you sequence the work.
5. Memorizing terms without practicing application
Definitions alone will not carry Contracts, Agency, Financing or Calculations items. The bulletin even includes sample questions that reward applying a concept to a fact pattern, not reciting a glossary line.
Fix: After you learn a topic, do practice sets that force choices. Pair practice exams guidance with real estate math and the state portion study guide. For look-alike words, use confusing terms.
6. Bringing prohibited items—or forgetting center vs remote differences
Phones, smart watches, notes, bags, food, drinks and other listed items cannot be within reach or line of sight. Hats not worn for religious reasons are prohibited. At centers, companions (including drivers) may not wait in the center, building or on the property (PSI bulletin).
Fix: Empty pockets during check-in. Leave devices in the car or in center storage. For remote, clear the desk and room before the scan—our remote setup guide lists the room rules.
7. Mismanaging the 4-hour clock
You have four hours for 110 salesperson questions, plus a small number of unscored experimental items that still use clock time (PSI bulletin). Spending too long on early math items, or rushing the NJ statute section at the end, both cost points. So does changing answers without a reason.
Fix: Use a pacing plan from multiple-choice strategy: flag and move, return with leftover time, and protect high-weight sections. Cancel or reschedule only under PSI's rules (cancellations need at least 2 days' notice; missed appointments forfeit the fee).
For timed practice after the 75-hour course, use the practice exams course page. If you still need pre-licensing hours, Business Elementary's 75-hour course is the first step.
