The Week Before Your NJ Real Estate Exam: A Day-by-Day Plan
The short answer: Use the last week to sharpen, not to learn everything from scratch. Take one full timed practice exam early in the week, then spend the middle days on your weakest outline topics. Check your logistics before PSI's cancellation cutoff, which requires PSI to receive any cancellation at least 2 days before the exam (PSI candidate bulletin). Keep the last day light.
The exam itself doesn't move. The salesperson test is 110 scored questions in 4 hours, and you need 70% (77 correct) to pass (PSI candidate bulletin). Your job this week is to show up ready for that.
What should the final week accomplish?
Three things:
- Find and fix weak spots. By now you've covered the whole outline. This week is for the topics that still cost you points.
- Practice the format. You'll sit at a computer for up to four hours, and 5 to 10 unscored "experimental" questions count against your time (PSI candidate bulletin).
- Remove surprises. ID, location, start time and tech should all be settled days ahead.
What does a day-by-day plan look like?
Count backward from your exam date. Shift the days to fit your work schedule.
| Day | Study | Logistics |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days out | Review your notes on the whole outline | Log in to your PSI account. Confirm date, time and test center or remote format |
| 6 days out | One full timed practice exam | Check that your ID is current and that your name matches your PSI account |
| 5 days out | Go through every miss and sort them by outline topic | Note your eligibility expiration date |
| 4 days out | Weakest national topic, then the NJ-specific items | Remote: run PSI's compatibility check |
| 3 days out | Math and your second-weakest topic | Decide go or no-go before the cancellation cutoff |
| 2 days out | Short mixed quizzes, not a full exam | Test center: plan your route. Remote: set up the room |
| 1 day out | Light review of your mistake list only | Lay out your ID. Get a normal night's sleep |
Why take the full practice exam early in the week?
Because you need time to act on what it shows. Federal education research rates quizzing as a strong way to strengthen learning. It also finds that checking what you know after a delay, not right after studying, gives a truer picture (IES Practice Guide, Recommendations 5b and 6a; 6a's evidence is rated low).
A full exam on day 6 leaves four days to repair what it exposed. PSI also warns that its practice exams aren't a substitute for study, and that a good practice score doesn't guarantee a pass (PSI candidate bulletin). Our guide to using practice exams well covers how to review one. If you want fresh timed sets, see our practice exams.
Which topics deserve the middle of the week?
Let your misses decide. Two areas are worth a deliberate pass:
- The New Jersey items. The outline includes 30 NJ-specific items on licensing, licensee conduct and the Commission. Our state-portion study guide lists them by topic.
- Math. Real estate calculations are 7% of the salesperson outline (PSI candidate bulletin). The formulas are in our exam math guide.
When is the last day to cancel or reschedule?
PSI must receive your cancellation at least 2 days before the exam date. For a Monday exam, that means canceling by the previous Saturday. You can cancel online or by phone at (855) 579-4634, but not by voicemail (PSI candidate bulletin).
If you miss that cutoff, don't show up, arrive after the start time or lack proper ID, you forfeit the fee. So make your go or no-go decision on day 3, not the night before.
Before pushing the date back, check your eligibility expiration. It ends one year to the day after it's issued, and you must pass and apply for your license before then (PSI candidate bulletin). Our timeline guide explains the deadline.
What should you do the night before?
Keep it short. Review your mistake list once, then stop. Put out what you need:
- At a test center: one current, government-issued photo ID with your signature. Temporary IDs aren't accepted, and personal items such as phones, bags, food and notes stay out of the testing room (PSI candidate bulletin).
- Remote: a clear desk, good lighting and a computer that has passed the compatibility check. No scratch paper is allowed, and you can't take breaks (PSI candidate bulletin). Our remote exam setup guide walks through the room rules.
What happens on exam morning?
At a test center, arrive 30 minutes early for sign-in. If you're late, you may not be admitted. Remotely, you can launch within 30 minutes of your booked time, but you forfeit the fee if you haven't started within 15 minutes after it (PSI candidate bulletin). PSI links a short computer tutorial from the bulletin, so watch it ahead of time if the format is new to you.
Your score appears on screen at the end. If it doesn't go your way, our guide to reading your PSI score report helps you plan the retake. For the full exam rundown, see the PSI exam guide.
If you haven't finished the required coursework yet, Business Elementary's 75-hour pre-licensing course comes first.
